For SP

A member of the Facebook Pin Loom Weaving Support Group asked me today if I knew of a weaving pattern featuring a cross. I only knew of plus-shaped crosses, so I offered to design one for her. Here are the results. I’ve included possible modifications below the instructions. After another group member, Sandi Suggs, wove up both versions, I’ve decided the change in “Cross 2” looks better, but I’m not sure changing “Cross 1” would yield good results.

Cross 1

L1-3: YBSS “Light Denim”
L4: RHS “Navy”

Cross 1

R1: P
R2:  (U3, O1) x 2, U3, P9,  (U3, O1) x 2, U3
R3: P2, (U3, O1) x 2, U3, P5,  (U3, O1) x 2, U3, P2
R4: Rpt R2
R5: Rpt R3
R6: Rpt R2
R7: Rpt R3
R8: Rpt R2
R9: P
R10: P
R11: P
R12: Rpt R3
R13: Rpt R2
R14: Rpt R3
R15: Rpt R2
R16: P

Here’s another option for Cross 1. This one will make serifs at the top and ends of the crossbeam. The optional stitches will make the  lower edges straight; leaving them out might make the base of the cross too wide.

Green marks are optional

Alternate instructions for R11: Rpt R9

L1-3: YBSS “Lilac”
L4: RHS “Lavender”

Cross 2

The original pattern seemed more balanced by having R11 repeat R9, but after seeing it woven up, I decided the woven version looks better with U3 added in the middle of the row. Now the original instructions are the alternates.

I wanted to call the second cross “God Is Love” because we were singing that hymn (it begins, “Earth with her ten thousand flowers . . .”) while I wove the purple square. So that’s its real name.
