A PLW friend’s birthday is today, so in her honor—because she’s so supportive of my pattern designing attempts—I’m posting some new patterns.

I haven’t given much thought to PL patterns lately. I’d felt so discouraged recently trying to post the patterns I designed earlier this year (but didn’t post while they were fresh in my mind) that I essentially gave up on them.

The squares in this post are a small stack of experimental designs based on a pattern originally devised 25 June 2016. They’re listed in the order they were woven. You might notice the evolution of certain ideas and motifs. A few are interesting, but none of them have proper names.

June 25 2016 sm ntbk 2, front. I don’t think this one is very interesting, but it led to more ideas.

June 25 2016 sm ntbk 3, front. I like the division of the square into quadrants. I thought it would be interesting to make little diamonds in each, so I included a couple of alternate diagrams (not yet woven by me).

June 25 2016 small notebook 3 — optional (light blue) stitches were not woven in the sample, thus creating little + signs in the centers of the motifs. Warping in sample: L1/2-4 (this shows the plus signs unlike the L1-3/4 sample of June 25 2016 small notebook 2, above.

June 25 2016 sm ntbk 3b sub 1, front. This one looks familiar to me. It may have been previously discovered and posted on this blog with an actual name.

June 25 2016 small notebook 2b sub 2 — sample does not show optional light red sts woven. It’s customary to plain weave R 16, however, if you’re joining squares, I think you can have pattern sts in R16. This pattern could be woven on a rigid heddle loom in which case you’d definitely include the R16 sts in the pattern repeat.

June 25 2016 sm ntbk 2b sub 3, front — This pattern has seeming bent lines that form a sort of large X or *. I’ve included an alternate diagram that straightens the lines and moves the center line of diamonds outward.

June 25 2016 small notebook 2b sub 3 — I recommend L1/2-4 warping for this design. (Sample is woven L1-3/4.) Not sure I agree with the note on the design chart, but it’s worth considering,

June 25 2016 small notebook 2b sub 4 — looking at the sub 3 version gave me an idea, so I drew up this diagram, but haven’t tested it yet. Recommended warping: L1/2-4.

I love the squares and plus signs. Getting geared up to try some of these!
Thanks for posting them. Don’t give up!
